Day of the Dead Forever First Class Postage Stamps

Four sugar skulls, each personalised as a member of a family - a child with a hair bow, a father in a hat and moustache, a mother with curled hair, and a second child - set against black so the marigold orange and the white of the skulls carry the design. Luis Fitch illustrated them and Antonio Alcalá was the art director. The pane of 20 repeats the four designs across five rows. The Postal Service issued them in 2021, the first of three consecutive years of Hispanic-themed issues.

Día de los Muertos falls on the first two days of November, and these go out with the mail leading up to it: invitations to a gathering around an ofrenda, cards to relatives, notes to friends who keep the tradition. A fair number of buyers use them well outside that window simply because the artwork holds up next to anything else in the drawer. One pane covers twenty envelopes, which for most families is the entire list.
