Reindeer only entered the Santa story in 1823, with the publication of A Visit From St. Nicholas. Rudolph arrived more than a century later, in a 1939 promotional booklet written by Robert L. May for Montgomery Ward, and became fixed in the culture with the 1964 stop-motion television special that has aired every year since. This set draws on that special rather than on the song.
